    Food Microbiology

Food Microbiology studies the interaction of microbes and food. This field of study is vast. It includes the study of microbes and their advantageous and adverse effects on raw and processed foods’ quality and safety. This discipline covers various aspects of food, from harvest to consumption. However, it is very much different from nutrition.

Food microbiology is the study of microbes associated with food. This includes studying how to identify microbes and classify them based on how they live and how these microbes can be used based on their features. Food microbiologists study the microbes that inhibit, form, or contaminate food. This includes the study of microbes causing food spoilage, pathogens that might cause disease (particularly if food is not properly stored or cooked), microorganisms utilized to produce fermented foods like yogurt, cheese, bread, wine, and beer, microbes with other helpful functions, like producing probiotics.

    Who are Food Microbiologists?

A Food Microbiologist is responsible for ensuring food products’ quality through microbiological analysis and monitoring food safety and hygiene system.

Does the ill-treatment of nature unsettle you and make you wish you could do something about it? Well, here’s your chance to make a real difference by taking up Environmental Biology. Read on to know more about the field, its scope, salary details, and career path.

    What is Environmental Biology?

Environmental Biology is a part of environmental science. The fundamental objective of the Environmental Sciences is to gain more scientific information (physical, chemical, and biological) concerning the working of natural environments, the impact of humans and their activities on the ecosystem, and bringing about awareness of obvious and subtle adverse effects that human beings have on the environment. Environmental Biology, as the name implies, focuses on the biological aspect of environmental science.

The field is rather similar to ecology as it concentrates on plants and animals’ relationship with the ecosystem. The difference lies in how environmental biology also regards the impact of human beings on other species and the environment as a whole.

To put it in simpler terms, Environmental Biology is a field that studies the habitats, adaptations, and evolutionary aspects of living organisms and their relationship with their surrounding ecosystem.

DNA Microarray Protocols – eBook Download

Microarray technology has brought a revolutionary change in functional & Structural genomics for biologists much the same way as nanotechnology revolutionized the electronics and medical field. Microarray technology enables the scientific community to monitor the expression of thousands of genes on a single glass slide.

Its potential applications range over a wide area including:

    • immunoassay (protein microarrays)
    • expression analysis
    • drug discovery
    • comparative genome hybridization
    • mutation detection
    • assessment of gene copy number
    • resequencing
    • sequencing by hybridization and much more

In This COVID Pandemic Era – the Microarray technique has been helpful for the scientific community. The construction of SARS-CoV-2 proteome microarray for global profiling of COVID-19 specific antibodies, IgG, and IgM responses – has aided in the development of effective diagnostics & Vaccines against the spreading Virus.

As per a survey, the global microarray market is slated to reach USD 5.52 billion by 2023 from USD 3.82 billion in 2018, at a compound annual growth rate of 7.6%.
